Monona Grove student wins AskAway YouTube video contest

During this week’s observance of AskAway Awareness Week, Monona Grove High School student Jacob DeBacher was notified that his “I Love AskAway” video received top honors in the first-year YouTube competition.

DeBacher’s video stars a Ninja wannabe in black garb who turns to Google to find a “Dojo”—or martial arts training facility—to hone his skills. He finds such a center, but when he arrives it has a large sign on the door that reads “No Ninjas.” The Ninja then turns to AskAway for help locating a Dojo, after which he is shown demonstrating the moves and techniques required to be a Ninja.

The goal of the YouTube video contest was to have Wisconsin teens and young adults (12-18) share their positive experiences with the AskAway chat service by creating and posting short videos. DeBacher will receive a $150 Best Buy gift certificate for his first place video, which can be viewed on YouTube at

AskAway expands the long-time role of libraries as primary sources for general information in their communities and centers for research and study within schools. Wisconsin residents using AskAway are linked to research professionals who can help them find and use authoritative sources in their school or local public library, a regional library, or in the BadgerLink collection of databases. Some of the most common requests from students are for help developing science fair projects, researching historical figures, or gathering information for essays and extended projects in literature and the social sciences.

The statewide availability of AskAway is made possible by an LSTA grant administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Like BadgerLink, AskAway is an online service that opens the vast resources of Wisconsin’s libraries to all residents, no matter where or when they need information.

The 24-hour-a-day AskAway service is staffed by the 24/7 Reference Consortium—a group of hundreds of librarians across the country that work together to provide this service—as well as local Wisconsin librarians who contribute their time to the consortium. Wisconsin residents benefit from this expanded service.

“The Internet can be difficult to navigate and information can be hard to find,” <NAME> said. “And sometimes the information you need is available only in a library resource. But through AskAway, experienced librarians help you easily locate and evaluate the information you’re seeking.” You can get answers quickly and learn how to answer your own questions, both within and beyond traditional library hours. “With AskAway you get help wherever you are, whenever you need it,” <NAME> said.

Tighter state and local budgets make cooperative ventures like AskAway more vital than ever. AskAway expands a service that librarians have provided for years, and by joining a national consortium the costs are minimal for the high level of service customers receive. Libraries already provide many services people can access from outside of the physical library building, including online library catalogs, full-text of magazines, newspapers, books and other online resources. AskAway is just another way of expanding the services libraries already provide.

You can access AskAway at www.askaway.info, or through your local library’s website. And best of all, it’s easy! For more information, contact the <LIBRARY NAME> at <PHONE NUMBER>, or visit online at <URL>.

Ask a librarian for answers to your questions through a service provided by libraries and AskAway librarians, a group of public and academic libraries from throughout the state in cooperation with other libraries around the country. You can use either Live Chat or E-mail to ask a question.

Select Live Chat and one of the librarians on duty around the state or around the country will begin a chat session with you to answer your question or help you find the information you need. Live Chat is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Select E-mail and a Reference Services librarian from your local Library will answer your question with an e-mail reply. E-mail us anytime and we will respond as soon as possible during library hours, generally within 24 hours.
